Secure the space below the leak
Keep people and belongings away from a bulging or weakened ceiling. If water is near lights, wiring, panels, or outlets, do not touch the wet area and request help from a competent technician. Catch drips only when this can be done from a safe floor position.
Do not climb onto a roof during rain, on a wet surface, in strong wind, or without a safe work system. Initial inspection can begin inside the building and from the ground using distant photographs.
Document the relationship with rainfall
Record wind direction, rain intensity and duration, when dripping starts, and when it stops. Photograph stains, ceiling joints, and visible water paths. Map the position relative to exterior walls, ridges, valleys, gutters, vents, or roof penetrations.
Water can travel along framing or underlayment before appearing at the ceiling. The indoor drip point is therefore not proof of the exact defect above.
Inspect cause groups from a safe position
From a safe position, look for shifted or damaged roofing, open laps, displaced flashing, cracked sealant, blocked or overflowing gutters, and penetrations around pipes or antennas. Also inspect parapet cracks and roof-to-wall junctions.
A building can have more than one water path. Gutter cleaning or emergency repair should be attempted only when access, equipment, and working conditions are demonstrably safe.
Avoid one-size-fits-all repairs without diagnosis
Applying sealant to every joint can block drainage paths, fail on dirty surfaces, or merely move the water-entry point. Replacing roof tiles, repairing flashing, correcting gutter slope, and applying waterproofing systems require different materials and detailing.
After the cause is confirmed, check substrate compatibility, preparation, application weather, curing time, coverage, and manufacturer instructions. Verify the repair using a safe method before closing the ceiling or interior finish.
Prepare project data before selecting a product
Prepare interior and exterior photos, roofing type, approximate age, area dimensions, gutter and penetration locations, repair history, and the pattern during rain. Do not infer a brand or quantity from one photograph alone.
